Since the day here in NY was essentially chilly and overcast, and as I was feeling done in by the week and a sad family anniversary, I decided to spend the day doing nothing.
Flicking thru the Turner Movie Classics listings, I found they were showing “The Big Sleep” at 4 and I settled down and watched it, admittedly for the umpteenth time, but this time, instead of just going with my beloved Bogie and Betty, I tried to make sense of it, and, EUREKA!, I may have finally gotten the famously impossible-to-understand script in working order for my addled brain.
It makes sense if one looks at it as two movies, one having to do with Sean Regan and the other with the events around the murder of the book seller. Anyhow, that’s my eureka for the day and I will put it to the test when I next sit down and watch it…..
They’ve shaved the ancient tamarind tree in front of our house, as though cancerous. I used to climb it when I was a little boy, chewing sour fruit and then, putting aside the Archie comics, furtively observing the cigar-smoking fathers of neighbouring households emerge from their gates and sit out on folding chairs. I had passed many summer afternoons that way.
Eureka!
