Our skies have been very Cecil B. DeMille of late, almost apocalyptic. When I first moved to Union Square, a city block-sized vacant lot lay outside my window, which afforded a huge vista of the sky. I remember watching a storm roll in describing a perfectly straight line in the sky, sun on my side and blackness west of the line. As the storm moved east, you could actually watch Broadway being drenched while Fourth Avenue basked in sunlight; that is, of course, until the storm moved on and Fourth Avenue and its unsuspecting strollers were drenched, just before all was blotted from view as my windows became a waterfall, affording a view not dissimilar the one experienced in an old fashioned car wash.
