There are a lot of ‘For Rent’ signs up these days. Quatorze and I spent some time at the Morgan Library yesterday (as the BlagueMaster explained to me, “They’re books there!”, in a tone of surprise that I was going, laced with a healthy dollop of sarcasm) and then we took the bus to 57th and Madison and walked over to Bloomies.
That’s when we saw any number of stores shuttered with “For Rent” signs, in a very ritzy part of town. As for Bloomies, it is undergoing a “fabulous” renovation. I mentioned to Quatorze that I wanted to see if we could be in and out in under 10 minutes, and despite having found the men’s unmentionables dept moved the length of the store, the entire transaction was accomplished so quickly (a side benefit of never changing brands/colors) that we were out in 9 minutes flat. Fabulous indeed.
And the lovely luncheonette pictured above was where my Mother, some 70 years ago, had her first milk shake, a blushing bride new to America. And it still has the best lemonade to be had anywhere.
