If you are of the opinion the recession isn’t here, well, I disagree.

In the course of one morning I had a record number of solicitations : NYC Ballet, Channel 13, Policeman’s Benevolent League, Lincoln Center……and they will not end there I am afraid. From my vantage point on a trading desk, it looks pretty grim out there.

The best solicitation came one Sunday night around 9PM when I was called by the Met Opera. I pointed out to the witless person on the call that it was late, it was a Sunday, and asked if she would be calling Joe Volpe as well. She asked, WHO?”

The next morning I called the Met’s General Manager and recounted the tale to one of his secretaries, who while trying not to laugh, said Volpe, who was noted for his temper, would not be pleased and that she’d make sure it did not happen again……..

And yet: the sky is still blue, edifices stand in spite of chaos and turmoil, and we endure, some with trepidation. Some with grace.

I like my churches ornate, Gothic and full of candles and statuary, drafty, slightly spooky, and sparsely attended. These auditorium mega-churches out in the ruburbs are so disposable. Just about any church structure built since 1950 has been dreadful.
