Today at the DBR: Starting the day with Lionel Trilling is a sure way of giving convalescence a bit of edge. “The Princess Casamassima,” from The Liberal Imagination, is the very highest kind of criticism, a fierce look at the world that compels you to read the book that has inspired the critic’s vision. Since I’ve already read Henry James’s novel twice, I allowed myself to go straight to the beautiful final chapter.
