Matins: William F Buckley dies, at 82.

Nones:  And we’re back. Something about corrupted update code knocked out the server. While The Daily Blague was down, I went ahead and posted today’s Morning Read in the Vestibule at Portico. Think I’ll do that as a matter of course. Directive from the Department of Redundancy Department. Oremus….
§ Matins. This, I didn’t know:

In his spare time at Millbrook, young Bill typed schoolmates’ papers for them, charging $1 a paper, with a 25-cent surcharge for correcting the grammar.

Prudence forbids me to say how chillingly neat I find this.

§ Nones. When I overhauled The Daily Blague last summer, one of my objectives was to diversify risk by maintaining the Web log at one server and the Web site (Portico )at another, on the theory that if both went down nobody would be reading either. That helped maintain sanity this afternoon…

… when in any case I was too busy in the kitchen — and out shopping for the kitchen — to be posting much anyway. The beef stew is simmering in the oven; meanwhile, I’ve got to prepare the pearl onions (a big drag) and the mushrooms (a snap). So much for boeuf bourguinon. Next on the list is onion soup — almost pathetically simple. (Slice onions; brown onions; poach onions.) If I can still stand being in the kitchen, I’ll do some prep work with the nuts for tomorrow’s dessert preparation (a Dacquoise).
