Daily Office

Matins: I’ll be at Carnegie Hall this evening, where Thomas Meglioranza, whose wonderful voice I haven’t heard in well over a year, will be singing at the Weill.

Nones: Who knew there was an Uncyclopedia? Why didn’t you tell me?

Vespers: You ought to want to go to the movies. Here’s why…

Oremus….

§ Matins. Ordering the tickets online from CarnegieCharge was not as easy as it ought to have been. I had to set up a new account, for one thing. For another, it was very unclear whether the tickets would be mailed to me or held at the box office. I worked that out this morning. They’re going to be held.

Kathleen is planning to come with me. One thing that she loves about Katten, Muchin is the proximity of the office to Carnegie. No longer does she have to cope with the N or the R train, coming up from Wall Street. All she has to do is walk a few blocks along 57th Street.

Actually, I’ve been listening to Tom’s voice a lot. His Schubert album is a very big treat, and all of it is on the Black Nano….

§ Nones. So, Starbucks will be closing for a few hours this afternoon. Le café américain — meaning the place, not the drink. I’m sure that cafés in France can be funky (I’ve never been to one, unless you count the Café de Flore, which I don’t), and pretty full of themselves, too. The surliness of Starbucks’s baristas seems downright imported. I have nothing against chain stores… Really, I haven’t got a thing to say against Starbucks. But I can count the times I’ve been in one on two hands. One and a half, really.

It’s a matter of not being able to tune out the surroundings when I’m trying to read or write. I stay out of libraries for the same reason. (Thanks, Roman.)

§ Vespers. From Conversations with Myself*

 — Do we have to go? It’s miserable out there, and I’m so sleepy that I can hardly stand up.

— But of course we have to go! And you’re just complaining because you don’t want to get dressed, right?

*Work in progress.

I’m sleepy too, and it’s so crummy out. Hope we both make it there.
